The Antibiotics-Diabetes Link in China
Majid Ali, M.D.
In September 2013, the Journal of the American Medicine Association (JAMA) reported that 50.1% of over 46 thousand Chinese tested for diabetes were found to have prediabetes or diabetes type 2. The JAMA report failed to recognize the role of antibiotic in the leap-frogging incidence of diabetes in China.
Insulin toxicity that leads to diabetes is rooted in gut fermentation, impaired oxygen signaling, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Antibiotics play a central role in altering bowel ecology and gut fermentation. Regrettably, these facts are ignored in China as they are in the U.S.A. and Europe.
Role of Antibiotics in Diabetes Epidemic China
Here are some important facts to be considered:
* China produces about 210,000 tons of antibiotics annually (Science 2015;348:1100)
* Antibiotic abuse is rampant in China.
* About 97,000 tons of antibiotics are administered to livestock.
* Manufacturers secretly release antibiotics into sewage since there are no effective regulatory controls over disposition of antibiotics.
