What Is Desirable Testosterone Level for Women?

Should it be below 41? Or below 48? Or below 74? I mention these three levels because I hold in my hand three lab reports of three adult women. My answer: none of them. In my female patients without hormonal problems, blood testosterone levels were below 12 (nannograms per milliliter). I might add that I served as director of laboratory in a major hospital for 22 years. I anticipate the question: If you are right, why do labs use normal lab ranges so different from each other? My answer: your guess is as good as mine.

When I see teenagers with blood testosterone levels over 15, I consider it my responsibility to establish or rule out the presence of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), which is a very serious threat to the reproductive health of teenagers affected by it. So What Can Be Made of Testosterone Lab Ranges?

Simply stated, the testosterone ranges cited above are not based on a scientific study of testosterone metabolism in healthy women. The prevailing lab ranges were established completely ignoring the insulin metabolism. Also these ranges were considered before the onset of the wave of gender devolution (boys become girl-like and girls becoming boy-like). I discuss this subject at length in my free Testosterone Course.
