Journalists are expected to be watchdogs for society. In health stories, the writers of The New York Times have been lapdogs, not watchdogs. They demonized fats for about sixty years, warning the readers about the dangers of butter, eggs, and other healthy fats. On September 2, 2014, the Times reversed its advice with publication of an article entitled “A Call for Low-Carb Diet” with the following words: “People who avoid carbohydrates and eat more fat, even saturated fat, lose more body fat and have fewer cardiovascular risks than people who follow the low-fat diet that health authorities have favored for decades, a major new study shows.
