Why I Never Diagnose the Metabolic Syndrome. Why No One Else Should Diagnose It As well

Majid Ali, M.D.

What Is the metabolic syndrome? I do not know. What Is cardio-metabolic syndrome? I do not know that either. If I do not know what the metabolic syndrome and the cardio-metabolic syndromes are, how can I diagnose them?

Why should no on one else diagnose the metabolic syndrome and the cardio-metabolic syndromes? I explain my answer in other articles in this “The So-Called Metabolic Syndrome Series,” first as pathologist, then as a surgeon, then as researcher, then as an integrative physician. Finally I offer some comments on the subject as a student of philosophy of healing.

Why Can’t a Pathologist Ever Diagnose the Metabolic Syndrome?

Because there are no microscopic criteria for the diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome. Nor are there any biochemical criteria for establishing this diagnosis. The same holds for cardio-metabolic syndrome.

I served as a hospital pathologist for twenty-nine years, twenty-five of them as chief pathologist and laboratory director. My primary responsibility was to direct a diagnostic service, which not only meant making diagnoses with microscopes and lab analyzers but also assisting other doctors in diagnostic work in daily basis.

I also attended and gave several hundred conferences in which doctors would nearly always bring up the subject of the metabolic syndrome. I never heard anyone present the results of a study in which the syndrome was reversed with any drugs.

As for the prevailing diagnostic criteria used by doctors who diagnose the so-called metabolic syndrome, I list them and show their utter acceptability in other articles (listed below) in this The So-Called Metabolic Syndrome Series.

So I do not diagnose the metabolic syndrome for anyone because it futile. It only promotes the use of multiple drugs with sheer confusion of purpose.

What Is the Real Problem in The So-Called Metabolic Syndrome?

It is insulin toxicity, which is measurable and quantifiable, scientifically and reproducibly.
